Saudade Hat Kit by Ysolda Teague

PAPER PATTERN IN CURRENT KITS ARE SLIGHTLY DAMAGED SO PRICE REDUCED. The stitch patterns of this Fair Isle hat by Ysolda Teague make a sampler of traditional peerie and “X and O” motifs that’s a fun way to try out stranded colourwork or to play with colour shading if you’re more experienced. Three shades of grey and two of yellow are used to subtly shade the patterns. Which colours are contrasted and which blended, which are background and which are pattern, changes throughout to create a lively sense of movement. The pattern is charted to focus on a pattern being worked against a background, rather than on individual colours. Work the pattern colour so that the yarn is dominant and use the blank columns at the side of the chart to plan out your own colour scheme. Don’t be afraid to rip back if the colours aren’t working but remember that a certain level of discord makes the patterns come alive.

This kit will come in the colours shown in the photo's.

Kit - Antarctica Hat, Mittens & Neckwarmer

£41.05

This kit features a hat, mittens and neckwarmer pattern, it is a replica of a set J&S employee and knitter Sandra Manson gifted Dr Alexander Kumar. Jamieson & Smith is proud to have had these wool garments accompany Dr Alexander Kumar during his 2012 stay at Concordia Station, an Antarctic research station. Alex spent nine months at the station, enduring temperatures as cold as –91°C!

The hat is reversible, to suit your mood and give extra cosiness. Make the Fair Isle pattern side first, then you turn the hat inside out and make a lining for the hat. You can knit the lining all in one shade, or use up all your bits of spare wool making stripes. The hat is knitted in the round and an optional bobble can be added on one or both sides. If you decide to have a bobble on both sides, don’t make it too big or your hat won’t sit nicely on your head.

The neckwarmer is knitted in the round using the Fair Isle technique. Pattern rounds use two shades of yarn, and the shade not in use should be stranded loosely at the WS of the work, taking care not to pull too tight and pucker the fabric.

The mittens are knitted in the round from cuffs to fingertips. The thumb is added using the ‘afterthought’ method.

This kit contains the Yarn and Pattern to knit the Hat, Mittens and Neck warmer, it is made in the world renowned 2ply Jumper Weight.
