Fair Isle for Beginners

One of two patterns created by Sandra Manson for her classes at the Campaign for Wool's Wool House exhibition at Somerset House, London in March 2013. This simple pattern gives you an insight into Fair Isle knitting in the round whilst creating a small pouch, helping give you the confidence to create larger Fair Isle projects.

Choose a main colour and contrast colour from our 2ply Jumper Weight range and leave a note of these in the 'Delivery and Order Comments' box at checkout, otherwise you will receive a colour combination at random.

Wool House was billed by the Campaign for Wool as ‘the world’s biggest ever celebration of Wool'. It was curated by renowned designer Arabella McNie and was a 12 day showcase of wool, the greatest of all natural fibres, and its abundant range of uses, including crafts, fashion and home-ware.

Kit - Antarctica Hat, Mittens & Neckwarmer

£41.05

This kit features a hat, mittens and neckwarmer pattern, it is a replica of a set J&S employee and knitter Sandra Manson gifted Dr Alexander Kumar. Jamieson & Smith is proud to have had these wool garments accompany Dr Alexander Kumar during his 2012 stay at Concordia Station, an Antarctic research station. Alex spent nine months at the station, enduring temperatures as cold as –91°C!

The hat is reversible, to suit your mood and give extra cosiness. Make the Fair Isle pattern side first, then you turn the hat inside out and make a lining for the hat. You can knit the lining all in one shade, or use up all your bits of spare wool making stripes. The hat is knitted in the round and an optional bobble can be added on one or both sides. If you decide to have a bobble on both sides, don’t make it too big or your hat won’t sit nicely on your head.

The neckwarmer is knitted in the round using the Fair Isle technique. Pattern rounds use two shades of yarn, and the shade not in use should be stranded loosely at the WS of the work, taking care not to pull too tight and pucker the fabric.

The mittens are knitted in the round from cuffs to fingertips. The thumb is added using the ‘afterthought’ method.

This kit contains the Yarn and Pattern to knit the Hat, Mittens and Neck warmer, it is made in the world renowned 2ply Jumper Weight.
